I've been working on this mixtape since 2018

Because your DJ name is "Geriatric Hentai" there is a lot of Japanese music on this mixtape and I am not remotely apologetic for it. There's also some political stuff, even though you're kind of burned out on that, because, uh, I've been working on this mixtape for a long time and the times have changed but the tracks have not. Not all the songs are danceable. Most of them are.

I decided that Rax gets Jubeat covers and you get Sound Voltex covers. This cover is from a song called NOT YOUR IDOL by Yuta Imai. I just thought it matched your vibes.

01. Keigo Hoashi ft. Emi Evans and J'Nique Nicole - A Beautiful Song

Nier Automata is not a game I think I will ever get you to play, but I think of you when I play it. It talks about philosophy, and the meaning of life, and the weight of human history, and the futility and joy of being human, in a way that reminds me a lot of when you talk about stuff. I think you'd get along with the vision of Yoko Taro games, which is a sort of, "everything sucks but nevertheless you must live and there is reason and purpose in that living." This song is a boss fight track sung by Simone de Beauvoir, who is in love with Jean-Paul Sartre. In real life, but also, in the game. I'm not going to explain it, you're going to have to play the game if you want to know what's happening there. J'Nique's voice is so bold and cuts through any track she's on with such clear power, and I love it.

02. Beady Belle - Pantile

When I think of you I associate you with this sort of 2000s era lounge sound; Hooverphonic, Zero 7, Belle and Sebastian, and this artist. Stuff that's modern, but is trying to emulate an older retro 60s sound. (There were a LOT of tracks on this mixtape in this vein initially, but I figured you'd know most of them, so the only one that made the cut is this one.) This is my favorite song from her because her soaring voice on those high notes is so beautiful. Also, pantile is a cool word.

03. Dessa - Hurricane Party

There's a fairly high chance you know this song already but since it always makes me think of you, I put it on anyway. Dessa is extremely hot and also extremely astute. I know you're tired these days. But also, the reason I do anything political is because you inspired me to. I often think about you when I'm trying to figure out how best to proceed in the current morass that is the intersection between activism and justice and just kinda existing in America these days. Like Dessa, you're a touchstone for these things to me.

04. Harumakigohan ft. Hatsune Miku - Melty Land Nightmare

A bunch of the tracks on this playlist have the video as "important information" - this is one of them. Please watch the music video and turn on closed captioning for the lyrics. I associate you with artificial sweeteners, garish colors, glorifying in everything plastic and mass produced; because of that the super-sweet, transparently fake-human tuning of Miku in this song makes me think of you. But also, this song is about cotton-candy colored lesbians and I think you should watch the music video because it's great. I love the shear between her voice and the heartfelt, moving story that this lyrics tell.

05. CHAI - Donuts Mind If I Do

Like I said before, I associate you with retro sounds, which means I also associate you with city pop and vaporwave. This song sort of straddles the line between both genres. The lyrics also make me laugh, like, you know what, heck yeah. We should write music about donuts. Why the heck not.

06. Tentenko - Good Bye, Good Girl.

Please please please watch the music video, please. I think I've actually shared this track with you before, but it's the touchstone track for this mix, and was the very first song I picked for it. Tentenko started as a regular (i.e., human rights violations ahoy) idol before breaking out as a solo artist with a strong vaporwave sound. The music video is shot on old film and to get the VCR effects, they actually made a real VHS tape recording, stuck it into a VCR, and smacked it periodically to generate the artifacts. Hell yeah, the 80s. Hell yeah, vaporwave. Hell yeah, this song.

07. Penelope Scott - American Healthcare (Glitzy version)

Pretend this song is just me crying into your DM box about my job again. Sorry for more politics but I love this song. I love that it's chiptunes and also careening despair. I love the chorus. This song is so angry. I am also so angry. But I feel like you might relate to the exhaustion in this one.

08. Sasuke Haraguchi ft. Kasane Teto - Hito Mania

This is a vocaloid song and it absolutely slaps. We go from dial up noises to a sick beat. A lot of my favorite vocaloid songs recently have been about the various papering-over coping mechanisms we use to survive the horrors of everyday life, and this is one of them. I've included an English version of the song in the song files if you want to understand the lyrics better; the english translated line "Is it that bad to work a polyester life?" makes me think of you every time.

09. Electron ft. Chis-A English - Lost (Just Like Me)

This is ALSO a Vocaloid (i.e., not a human singer) but holy cow you would not be able to tell, the tuning (vocaloid manipulation) is just divine. Enough sad stuff, here's a song with fat beats about dancing.

10. Teniwoha ft. Ado - Giragira

Please watch this music video too and turn closed captions on for the lyrics. Teniwoha is my favorite vocaloid composer, and Ado, an absolutely incredible singer, commissioned this song from them. Teniwoha is nonbinary, and this song is about gender and dysphoria in a way that I find quite touching and meaningful. Teniwoha's lyrics are usually so dense with wordplay that utilize both Japanese *and* English meanings that they're very hard to translate, but I think this is one of their more straightforward tracks. "Gira" is the onomatopoeia for "Sparkle;" the more common variation you may have heard is "Kira." Just, watch the music video, I love this one.

11. Moe Shop ft. TORIENA - Notice

I got really hard into Toriena this year. I found her through rhythm game music, because she came and did a live set in Chicago (I flew there to see her do it, and I also got her to sign an album and got to tell her how much I loved her music, it was sweet). Toriena is a bold and unique performer in that she blends chiptunes, hardcore, thrash guitar, and then sometimes will just stop and belt out enka for four minutes because she does whatever the heck she wants. I love her fearlessly adventurous style. You don't really get much of that on this track, though, which is hyperpop sweetness turned up to eleven. Moe Shop is a western musician who moved to Japan. I love that the lyrics give whiplash between "Notice me, senpai" and "That sensitive age when you want to start a coup."

12. Yasutaka Nakata ft. Charli XCX and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Crazy Crazy

I saved the most obvious for last. I think this even got radio play, because these are all very big name artists. Yasutaka Nakata is the musician behind Perfume, and Charli and Kyary are famous in their own right. Hyperpop is cute and good. Sometimes you just need a big heaping dose of sugar.
