Merry Christmas, santaciry is here with another mixtape
I have so many songs right now that I have multiple-track spillover into volume 9, orz. This mix felt like a shuffled deck of cards riffling into place, the songs just ordered themselves. This mix is best described as "A little feral." There's a lot of screaming on this mix, some of it more melodic than others. All the songs contain an undercurrent of desperation or general fuck you rioting. I've also included a lot of alternate tracks in this mix, more than usual (so I made a handy folder this time!). Also, this is a short raxmix - 9 out of 13 songs are under 4 minutes long.
The cover of this one is a track called Snow Goose by Mutsuhiko Izumi. There's this whole group of Goose songs (Blue Goose, Snow Goose, etc.) which are considered an "introduction" to the hardest levels of the game. I love them and their beat maps are fun!, but when I was making older raxmixes I was like, "those games are for newbs and Rax deserves better." But now it is 2021 and I have decided to do whatever I want. ♥ I saved all the furry shit for the very end, so stay tuned until then!
If you are not Rax but also like music, you're welcome to give this a listen too?

01. Elliot Lee - Pink (Freak)
I could have just left this raxmix at this song repeated 12 times and I think it would be valid tbh. I really like that the artist's name codes as masc but they present as cisfemme. They're also pretty young, but already so skilled. If my gender was "dances for 3 minutes and 42 seconds" I feel like this song is similarly just like, *gestures,* you. Also this song SLAPS that swing time with those drums feels so fucking good and the rapping is *chef's kiss*. It just occurred to me, but you could also read gender shit into this if you wanted? The blue and pink is meant to be a metaphor for depression, but it could also read as gender just as easily. It's crunchy if read that way.
02. Autoheart - Lent (Bright Light Bright Light Mix)
The vanilla ice cream track! I've loved Autoheart since 2006 (they're used on Halcyon's mixtape), but I just discovered this week that they're an all gay band and my love of them skyrocketed. (I don't know why I didn't figure that out earlier, tbh; the lead singer writes all their songs, and the pronouns in the lyrics always worked for me.) I've been on a huge kick listening to them recently as a result. The original of this track, "Lent," is from their debut album Punch. I like the original track a lot (it's an alternate file) but the grungy sound of this remix yells CGR to me. This singer enunciates so clearly and I like how fast the words go and the way he puts sounds together in this song.
03. Kah-Lo - Fire
This is a black independent artist that is just starting to take off, iirc? This track is bouncy as hell and the swagger is off the charts. Also I can't lie, my brain won't shut up about how this song should be mixed with Dessa's Fire Drills just to see what comes out. Now that I think about it, this is the first of two songs about fire on this mix. Melodic screaming appears in this track. (Also please enjoy the scream-transition between this song and the next, I am very proud of it)
04. Jazmin Bean ft. Zheani - Monster Truck
This song has...less melodic screaming. By far the most sound-aggressive/possibly anxiety-inducing of the tracks on this mix, this has a barely-holding-it-together chaos feel that just...encapsulates 2021 for me. Yeah. This song has a predatory sound with a cute female vocal, and whenever I find one of those I put it in my "give to rax" box for shipping. My favorite part of the track is the chainsaw growls. Actually this song has the lyric "I'm playing with fire...I don't want to burn my tongue" so there's just a lot of fire on this mix I guess
05. The Pretty Reckless - 25
I just learned that Sean Connery died a few months ago, so my friend watched Dr. No with me (I'd never seen it before). Then he said, "This is my favorite James Bond song that never was," and sent me this. I love that it uses so many sounds classic to the 60s. The piano section 3 minutes in!!! I just think this song is super cool. "The glass of my intentions turns to sand" is a great line.
Also from a mixing perspective I'm very fond of the fact that the bullet sound in the last song segues well into this James Bond song, because the intro to the James Bond movies is that view of the person getting shot and then the blood coming down the screen etc. etc.
06. Dolly Parton - Jolene played at 33 RPM
I don't know if you already knew about this, but this is an ancient vinyl record meme. People discovered back in the day that if you play the 45 of Jolene at 33 RPM, it morphs into an intense, lovely, really gay song. It's noteworthy that the lyrics are so clear—Dolly Parton must enunciate clear as a bell for it not to be slurred at this slower speed. Jolene is already a great song, but this dark and moody gay rendition takes it to another level imo.
07. Tina Turner - A Fool in Love (Live)
I got really into Tina Turner this year, because my friend and I were convinced that she was on a show we watch together called The Masked Singer. (She was not, it was amazingly Faith Evans.) Of course everyone knows Tina Turner, but I had no idea I knew so many Tina Turner songs before I did a deep dive on her. This was her very first single. She was supposed to be the backup singer, but the lead singer didn't show up. She volunteered to do it, and since they had already paid for the studio time, they said "sure why the hell not," not really expecting it to go anywhere. The studio versions are fine, but I vastly prefer this live version, where you can hear the tense desperation in her voice because she knew this song was her only shot and she was going to make it fucking count. This live version I ripped off of youtube; it goes ~2x as fast as the studio version and her yells on the chorus are transcendent. A review I read said that her voice sounds like "screaming dirt." Something about her rasp hooks behind your navel and yanks. I have consumed a startling amount of Tina Turner this year and all of her songs are great, but her live performances seem to capture this electricity, even the ones she did in her 60s. Anyway there's just something about this track that made me pick it to put on this mix.
08. Griff - Black Hole
If you play this song back to back with the BENEE track in the last raxmix, they almost sound like the same song lol. Despite that, I really wanted it on here. I love the boppy chorus that sounds like seconds ticking, and the dreamy-sounding chorus is addictive.
09. Inabakumori ft. Kaai Yuki - lagtrain
My latest vocaloid find! I've been so excited to share this artist with you. "Inaba Kumori" translates to "the fog in Inaba," which is the province Persona 4 takes place in. He's a comparative newcomer to vocaloid; his first album Anticyclone came out in 2019 and it's a banger, every track slaps. They use this rare utaloid (fan-made vocaloid) that sounds spacey and dreamy, and their songs all have a sense of space to them. I can't tell you how many hours I listened to this song on nonstop this year. The music video is also super cute. The lyrics are poetic and I've included an english version, which captures the lyrics beautifully, as well as nostraightanswer's Japanese cover of the song. Will Steton's English version is especially charming because it uses a lick from "Lost Umbrella," another Inabakumori song. This song makes me think about writing, that sense that something is locked up inside of you and it feels like everything around you is inviting you to find the words to get it out.
10. The Orion Experience - The Cult of Dionysus
This is a NYC-based band, which I knew without having to be told because a song lyric is "Too much is never enough," which was a neon sign that hung in Times Square for many years (it's gone now). Anyway, yes, I put this on because of that delightful chorus. I'm feeling devious / You're looking glamorous / Let's get mischevious / And polyamorous~
11. teniwoha ft. flower - Ignition
This is the next single that came out after Villain and Unicorn, and the lyrics aren't about being nonbinary, but the tuning on Flower in this song is fantastic. That gritty yell on "Fireman" hits the spot every time, Flower sounds alive. I love Teniwoha's twisty, bouncy melodic lines. The lyrics are about love and fire but maybe mostly about the latter tbh? We Love Teniwoha, it is known.
This is a youtube rip and I'm very sad about it. I went so hard trying to get this track legally. This album just came out in August and it's called NO BOY, which, yes absolutely. However, it's impossible to buy this album through any legal english-speaking means. My Japanese-speaking friend tried to help me, but we were finally stymied by the Japanese address requirement, which just too much effort. UGH. Teniwoha, let me give you money!!!!!!!!!!
12. George Clinton - Atomic Dog
I asked you if you know this song and you said no, but you do know this song. Everyone knows this song, it has been sampled to death. But this is the original track! The OG! This song just made me laugh, you can use it for a furry rave, have fun.
Bonus Track: thquib - i am now going to bark at you
This is such a high quality shitpost. The craft. The dedication. Apparently this became a tiktok meme which, sure? Tiktok is a weird place. I'm delighted by the very obvious homestuck and undertale influences. I'm not actually sure if this creator (I know them from vocaloid) is familiar with either title, and if they're not then the implication is that homestuck has become the language of shitposting and that's so cursed. Just like this track, which is also definitely cursed. Enjoy!
