growing up, bored and spoiled, everything is too easy, too sweet like sugar.

loves pokemon - everyone does. receives her first pokemon as a young girl, raises it, but is raised to be the best with high expectations, and wants to prove that her pokemon is the best, too. her favorite book is a child is a fairy tale about keldeo, the bold and brave pokemon with a horn that can overcome any opponent. her father skips the stuffed animals, goes straight to a blitzle. it's close enough.

while her childhood friend Grimsley is receiving education from the best move tutors in the region, Elesa enters contests because it's the ladylike thing to do. her looks and fashion sense garner more attention than her pokemon do. she's scouted, and becomes a model.

(lady gaga - i like it rough?)
besides, it's not contests that capture her imagination - it's battling that does. in her first battle against grimsley, he destroys her, and the feeling of not being the best, for once, keeps her up at night. she stops grooming her pokemon and starts training them, more and more.

(la roux - tigerlily)
the modeling world, however, is fascinating in its own way. ever shifting, everything is lies and beauty, every smile hides fangs. Elesa loves it. she quickly learns how to play the game and rises to the top faster than anyone expected.

(the bird and the bee - maneater)
she balances the two, training her pokemon between model runs, training with them to stay thin and honed, using the makeup techniques she learns and applying them to people. she soon drops the coordinator circuit entirely, takes to challenging the gym of any city she works in. wherever she goes, she begins to turn heads - not just for her beauty, but for her skills.

(tiesto - knock you out)
eventually, even this bores her. she stands at the doorstep to victory road with grimsley, ready to have one last battle. He looks at her expectantly, waiting for the challenge—but she only drops her hand, the poke ball she's holding slipping into her pocket noiselessly.

"i'm done," she says, and walks away without looking back.

(goldfrapp - ooh la la)
she dives into the modeling world, does photoshoots whose makeup and outfits render her unrecognizable. it's grimsley who calls her back, grimsley's rise to the elite four, the letters he sends her that she pretends not to read. they're talking about reinstating the nimbasa gym, he writes her, it can't be anyone but you.

as she destroys his letter with gilded scissors, macerating the paper into ribbons with neat snicks of the blades, she thinks: she's tired of red-eye flights, anyway.

()
the nimbasa gym was disbanded years ago and turned into the musical's theatre; nimbasa has always been a city of flash and pleasure, and the musical seemed to be a better fit. elesa asks the league to reinstate the gym. her daddy builds her a playground, with the gym nestled in the center. elesa wonders if her father will ever realize that she's grown up; realizes she doesn't want him to.

()
when b/w happens, she struggles to say what she's expected to say, but she can't make the expression quite reach her eyes. still, for the first time in a long while, she writes grimsley an e-mail.

there's a new kid. hilbert. watch out for him.

meanwhile, the subway masters introduce her to a girl who could be his twin.

(mgmt - electric feel)
the nimbasa gym is techno beats and neon lights, shadows and blinding light. she tends to beat her opponents before they can even find their footing. she's not bored of it yet, this strange synthesis of the two worlds she inhabits. sometimes she just stands alone in her gym after it's closed for the day (midnight exactly, Sunday through Friday), and listens to the electricity hum through the metal rails.

everywhere she goes, she's in the spotlight.
