*I don't know the manga so this is set a few weeks after Iida's arc
Midoriya's in profile, looking up at the falling snow, and Shinsou's steps come to a sudden halt.
They haven't talked much since—then. The school's gossip network keeps Shinsou aware of the adventure in excitement that plagues Hero Class A on a weekly basis, while he has—well, the general course as a whole has—homework, mostly. His friends invite him out after school sometimes, to the arcade or to kareoke. He trains at home, in secret, but when compared to the flash and dazzle of the hero course, there's really no comparison.
So it's weird, to see Midoriya standing still instead of running towards the next class, the next problem to solve; weird, to see him at all. He thinks about passing by without any acknowledgement, giving the guy some well-deserved space and maybe rest, but before he can move Midoriya blinks, and turns towards him.
He stares in surprise, and then smiles. "Oh, it's you."
Shinsou isn't used to replying to people. He scratches the back of his neck and after a too-long pause says, "Hey."
"I felt someone staring at me," Midoriya says, though Shinsou didn't ask. "Long time no see, huh?"
"Not that long," Shinsou says. "You've been busy, huh?"
Midoriya gives a little wincing, dissembling grimace, and laughs, and says: "Yeah, I guess you could say that."
And Shinsou could do something with that casual response, but—but it wasn't casual at all, is the thing. Midoriya's watching him, waiting to see what he would do.
He hates doing what people expect of him, because most of the time he doesn't want to do it anyway. Midoriya's not testing him as much as giving him an opening, so he takes it. He drops his hand away from his neck and says, "A bunch of us from the general course are going to kareoke after school. Do you want to come?"
Whatever Midoriya was expecting wasn't that, apparently. His jaw slackens with surprise, making Shinsou huff out a soft laugh. At the sound, Midoriya smiles a little too.
"Would it be okay if I invited some of my friends?" Midoriya says, fishing out his phone.
"I'll ask," he says, reaching for his own phone, "but I don't see why not."
Midoriya's busy, Shinsou's busy—but that doesn't mean there can't be time for each other in between.
