These are notes I wrote on 26 September 2015 while visiting the Montauk Lighthouse in Long Island, NY. It's more evidence of how badly I struggled with figuring out how the actual plot would unfold, but how I never had trouble with the tone I wanted. Some of these images I managed to work into part 5, but not all. I haven't retouched this all, so enjoy my typos lol.
50 masoners and laborers, delivered stone, completed in 5 months
Strong winter gales pounded shore shook the building
Managed by the Kanto coast guard?
Oroginallt 8 lamps, hollow wicks, prisms focus the beam for 24 miles
Stop erosion from the bluff? Planting trees, terracing and planting the bluff. 2 tier stone reventment
Green's accent coming back, Kris noticing when she visits again. It's kind of...nice, she says, coloring a little. But it's an accent he shared with Red.
Wingull visiting
Green recounting the story to Leaf of finding Red, taking him to safety.
Red can't stay with mom because Leaf took his old room. Green offers.
Leaf and Green walkig the beach in the evenings. Leaf leaping from rock to rock with her arms out, Green following her whistling. Where did you learn to whistle? From my dad, I guess. Teaching Leaf how to do it.
Leaf bringing scrub flowers to Red. Why don't you bring him anything? Green says I feed him, jsnt that enough. The next time Green and Leaf are gathering stones. Leaf tosses some into the ocean, Green gives her a white one. Don't say I never got you anything. She watches him pick through stones, plucks up a red one. Who's that for? Green doesn't answer, gives her a quick glance and slips it into his pocket. So that's how it is? She asks, quieter. His mouth twists and then he sighs, resigned. Yeah. That's how it is.
Plucking rose hips for Leaf in the late summer. So you don't catch a cold, he says, pulling the soaked strands away from her face. she'd ruj into the surf fully clothed.
Later sees him sitting on Red's bed, offering rose hips. Red opens his mouth, patient and petulant; Green colors, mumbles something too low to hear, and then, leans forward to slip the plump rose hip past his lips.
He steps back out later and Leaf is by the window, just looking at him. Green stops.
So that's how it is? She says again, quietly
Green's shoulders drop. Yeah. That's how it's always been, at least for me.
